Set in the year 1900, Jane is a writer, mother and wife attempting to cope with all three roles without much success. Rejections from publishers, as well as her husband, increase her frustration, driving her to a nervous breakdown. Jane begins to imagine that a woman is trapped behind the wallpaper in her bedroom. In a futile attempt to regain her sanity and independence, Jane tries to free the woman from behind the wallpaper.
