THE STRANGENESS OF COMING HOME
Synopsis
When Aaron returns home from his combat deployment overseas, he looks around his old
bedroom - now utilized as an extended closet for the rest of the house. Before he can fully unpack and settle, his mother has invited the neighbors over to celebrate his return. These people, who once felt like family, now feel like strangers. He leaves the party and calls an old friend, a young woman named Kristine, but she doesn’t pick up. Aaron’s sister, Riley, is unsure how to deal with “the prodigal son’s return.” Their early interactions are cold and stand-offish. Again, trying to relax, he catches up on old television shows with his mother. But he is quickly pulled away when friends contact him to catch up. At the bar, Aaron confesses to an old friend that he wishes to see Kristine, but cannot seem to get a hold of her. He is told to loosen up, and stays at the bar a while longer. Back at home, Aaron is still uncomfortable, he goes through his old belongings and finds letters and photos from his past. The feeling of nostalgia encourages him to talk to his sister, who is seemingly not home. Inside her room, he finds bits of his belongings lovingly placed on her shelf. Going to her at work, he apologizes for his odd behavior and they seem to reconnect once again. In the middle of their time together, he receives a call from Kristine, but declines to answer it in order to bond with his family. Finally having a moment of quiet reflection, Aaron sits in the bath and relaxes completely for the first time in years.
