Based on a Bernard Malamud story, the film is the story of Albert Gans' desperate search to save his dying father when medicine fails. A retarded girl lures him to her father, Rabbi Lifschitz, with a business card reading, "Heal the sick, save the dying. Make a silver crown." The Rabbi offers him a solution based on love and faith, and Albert's belief is put to a test.
