An overnight train hurtles through the barren winter from Chicago to New England. In a sleeper car, a young gas station proprietress and a retired professor exchange stories of love and loss. Told in reverse, the film strips away the layers of their relationship, removing their comforts, reassembling their defenses and gradually revealing their deepest secrets.
