At the end of an era of technological employment, Mae is spending her twenties taking care of her grandmother in her father’s hometown-a Black historical mining town in the middle of Appalachia. While Mae waits for her father, Wayne, to return, a federal work initiative arrives, and the town’s long abandoned mine reopens for work. BUT the miners are never allowed to see the inside for “safety” and “instant death”. Within months, Mae is working in the mines and is coming to terms with the fact that Wayne may never return like he’d promised until she hears his voice inside the mine.
