A confrontation between Lucy Gillnetter, who lives alone on an isolated ranch, and a nine-year-old boy, Ulysses Dade. Ulysses runs away from the country orphanage and hitchhikes to Lucy's ranch in the hopes that she will take him in. After considerable conflicct, Lucy accepts him on a trial basis.
