Based on a short story by Joyce Carol Oates, the film concerns the actions of a man tormented by tragic events which happened to him as a youth, and the release of his overwhelming guilt and anger when he confronts the man he feels perpetrated the crime against him. This confrontation locks the two men in an agonizing struggle for the truth, setting them on a collision course which leads to an emotional explosion.
