This Austrian-Japanese film was filmed on locations in Tokyo and New York. Young Austrian Simon (Serge Pinkus) speaks both Japanese and English. He has lived for many years in Japan, but his temporary home is New York. When a Japanese woman, Rika, invites him to share her New York hotel room, he moves in his collection of chairs gathered in the street. Back in Japan, he spends time at a famous courtesan's burial site and maintains a friendship with American radio host Helen (Sherri Weiner). Returning to Japan, Rika works as a department-store elevator operator. Helen is also friends with a Japanese jogger, fired from work but so shamed by the dismissal, he cannot bring himself to tell his family the truth. The lives of all these characters overlap into a montage of modern life. The film's title refers to the Westernization of Japan, where milk was introduced by Westerners.
