Emanuel — young, queer, and irrevocably lost — has found himself in the care of his aunts Marie and June, on a ranch in the wilderness. While there, Emanuel journeys outside of his body, crossing time & space, and coming face to face with a young St. Francis. Through his relationship with these women, with this land, with this saint, Emanuel begins the process of coming to terms with both his power and identity. In the film’s climactic moment, Emanuel and Francis embrace and kiss. Startled, Francis falls to the earth, his palms pierced by the sharp leaves of a yucca plant. This is how St. Francis receives the stigmata— and where Emanuel begins his spiritual, sexual, and emotional awakening.
