Benjamin lives on a communal farm in the near future. He is 13 years old and oblivious to the outside world; the foreign occupation of the state once known as California, the new oppressive government’s propaganda, and frequent violence. He is only concerned with his parents, his chores, and most of all, his next-door neighbor (and the love of his life) Abigail. After seeing Abigail sneak out one night, Benjamin follows her into the woods, where they discover her grandmother assisting a wanted resistance group. When government forces arrive later to detain Abigail and her family, Benjamin rushes to save her, but risks drawing himself and his family into the conflict and suffering the consequences.
